Why We Love Visual Content

They say that a picture is worth a thousand words, and according to research, that is an old adage that holds true. And in today’s world of multimedia and miscommunication that’s more true than ever before. There is a reason why we love to spend time on Instagram, Pinterest, Vine, Snapchat, etc, and a subsequent reason why marketers are increasingly occupying that space; We love visual information. Visual communication is everywhere today, from our TV screens, to our computers and smartphones, and more recently, (smart) watches. And also everywhere in our daily life, from crosswalks to traffic lights to advertisement displays and neon light, visual cues are everywhere. But why is that? Our brain processes visual cues incredibly quickly when compared to text. Our brains also remember visual information much easier than text, which is why your brain will make that processing even quicker the second time you see something. Psychologist Jerome Bruner of New York University has described studies that show that people only remember 10% of what they hear and 20% of what they read, but about 80 percent of what they see and do. But who am I, trying to explain why we love visual content when the good people over at Visage have already created this amazing infographic:
